Come in altri posti? Certo che no, la sabbia è corallina
e non scotta neanche a mezzogiorno e poi il mare è
un vero e proprio acquario. Mille, forse duemila isole (le più
piccole appaiono e scompaiono con le maree) in maggioranza
disabitate. I nativi pare provengano dall’India del sud e dallo
Sri Lanka, quando Vasco de Gama nel 1498 mise piede primo
tra gli europei nell’arcipelago ce li trovò.
Vasco de Gama era stato anticipato da Persiani, Arabi
e Cinesi, le Maldive addirittura compaiono nelle mappe di
Tolomeo del II sec. d.C. Prima sultanato poi nel 1965 repubblica,
le Maldive oggi vivono del turismo che ne ha fatto una delle
sue mete preferite.

he sand is white and fne like face powder and the sea is
sky-blue. As in other places? Of course not, the sand is
coralline and does not burn even at noon and then the
sea is a veritable aquarium. A thousand, maybe two thousand
islands (the smallest disappear and reappear with the tide),
mostly uninhabited. The natives seem to be from southern India
and Sri Lanka.
When Vasco Da Gama in 1498 became the frst European
to set foot here, the Persians, Arabs, Chinese had all been there
long before him. The Maldives, actually, appear on the maps of
Ptolomy in the II century A.D.. First a sultanate then in 1965 a
republic, today the Maldives live of international tourism, which
has made the archipelago one of its favourite destinations.
