he legendary Horatio and Anna Spaford from Chicago
arrive in Jerusalem in 1881. Their desire for a simple Christian
life soon led them to establish a solid relationship with the
locals. The colony of the “Americans” grew very fast. In order to
accommodate them all, a building initially constructed for a pacha
was purchased. It happened again in 1902. Baron Ustinov, in fact,
decided that American and European travellers required adequate
hospitality at a certain level in
theHoly Land.

leggendari Horatio e Anna Spaford di Chicago arrivarono
a Gerusalemme nel 1881. Il bisogno di una vita cristiana
semplice li portò presto ad instaurare ottimi rapporti con
la popolazione locale. La colonia degli “americani” si ingrandì
intanto rapidamente. Per poterli accogliere tutti venne allora
acquistato un edifcio inizialmente costruito per un pacha.
Una seconda svolta avvenne nel 1902. Il Barone Ustinov decise
infatti che occorreva dare ai viaggiatori americani ed europei
un’ospitalità adeguata e di un livello come non esisteva in Ter-
ra Santa.
Fu così che nacque The American Colony Hotel Jerusalem:
un luogo deputato ad occupare un posto unico nella storia di
Gerusalemme e del viaggio in Oriente. Il contributo che l’Ame-
rican Colony ha apportato, e continua ad apportare, alla Città
Santa è incontestabile. Gli ospiti illustri, della politica, della cul-
tura, del giornalismo, vi sono di casa.
Oggi la dimora degli Spaford è un celebrato albergo di 84
camere e suite, tutte moderne e funzionali. Un angolo raf-
